I remember my first charm bracelet. It was given to me by my mother for my fifth birthday. It was adorned with tiny silver bracelet charms that were just the right size for my five year old wrists. I remember taking the small wrapped box from my mother’s hands and ripping off the wrapping paper with excitement, wondering what was inside. I was delighted to see a cute silver bracelet with hearts of various sizes and styles hanging from it. Hearts were my favorite shape. I immediately asked my mom to put it on my wrist for me. I held my hand up to get a good look. The silver bracelet charms caught the light from a nearby window and glistened beautifully. It was perfect. My mother told me that the hearts symbolized her love for me. I don’t know if the reason I loved the bracelet so much at the time was because of the deeper meaning that it held, or because I just thought it was pretty, but I was attached to it and wore it every day that year.

Soon, I outgrew the bracelet, as one would expect a young child to do. I was so disappointed when I could no longer fasten the clasp around my wrist. I was about eight years old. Little did I know that the next year I would receive a brand new charm bracelet, complete with silver bracelet charms and all. I had made a best friend at my elementary school. We were inseparable during recess. When the bell rang, you would always find us, attached at the hip, playing on the bars or the swings. We had sleepovers often and the laughter and fun never ended. Of course, I invited my best friend to my ninth birthday party. She came with a gift, wrapped in a small box. When I opened it, I found a charm bracelet. I was so happy! It had silver bracelet charms, just like my old one. There was a charm that read “best friends”. My friend held up her wrist to reveal a matching “best friends” charm hanging from her charm bracelet. We were connected through that charm, a symbol of our undying friendship, and constant reminder that I would always have someone to lean on whenever I needed.

Naturally, I soon outgrew that bracelet too. Fast forward a few years to my first true love, whom I met in college. Our first trip together was in the summer of our junior year. We went to Europe and it was so much fun to explore a new environment together. I think it brought us closer together than ever. We were in a souvenir shop in London and I found a bracelet with silver bracelet charms, each representing a part of the beautiful city. I never wanted to forget this trip, for it was a milestone in our relationship. My boyfriend saw me eyeing the bracelet with the pretty silver bracelet charms and bought it for me.

Now I have a collection of three bracelets that are dear to my heart, all with silver bracelet charms. Maybe there is nothing really meaningful about silver bracelet charms, but that gift from my mother on my fifth birthday would unknowingly create a link between silver bracelet charms and love for me. The three people who gave me these gifts all remain important people in my life. My best friend from elementary school is still my best friend, my boyfriend from college is now my husband, and of course, my mother will always be my mother. The bracelets that they gave me represent all different types of love, each type just as important as the one before – a mother’s love, a best friend’s love, and romantic love.
