When I was a little girl, playing dress up at my grandmother’s house, I came across her beautiful antique charm bracelet. It looked so fun. It was a gold colored chain bracelet with about 20 different charms dangling from it. I put it on and went to go show my grandmother how pretty it looked on me. As it turns out, it was more than just a pretty bracelet; it was a chronicle of my grandmother’s life. After my grandma saw me wearing her cherished antique charm bracelet, she sat me down and proceeded to tell the story behind each one of her charms. Who knew that one’s whole life story could be effectively told through one little charm bracelet?

My grandmother received her antique charm bracelet from her mother on her fourteenth birthday. My grandma had been a dancer for many years, so attached was a ballerina charm, along with a cat charm and a horse charm, representing her two pets at the time. Over the years, more charms would be added as different milestones occurred in my grandmother’s life – a pair of scissors and a thimble to represent the job she got as a seamstress at age 17, a diploma to celebrate her high school graduation, a four leaf clover to bring her the luck that she needed on her first trip to Las Vegas, and a trolley in remembrance of her first trip to San Francisco. My grandma’s favorite fruit is strawberries, so she got herself a strawberry charm at one time or another. A friend got her a phonograph charm as a gift, to represent her love of music. Before her marriage, she had 10 charms on her antique charm bracelet.

On her wedding day, naturally my grandma received more charms as gifts. It was a special day after all; one that she would have to record on her antique charm bracelet. She received a heart, bouquet of flowers, and anchor charm (my grandpa was a sailor) from her mother. A friend gave her a dog charm (to represent the puppy that she and my grandpa had just bought together) and a sailboat charm. The next big event was the birth of my mother (her daughter). A pair of baby booties was added to her antique charm bracelet after that. As my mother grew older, she knew what significance my grandmother’s antique charm bracelet held. She got her a spatula charm to represent her delicious cooking. My grandma celebrated the birth of her first grandchild (me) by adding a pacifier charm. Finally, my grandpa got my grandma a flower waterer charm for their 50th wedding anniversary. It represents the garden that they planted together after retirement.

That is my grandma’s life story in a nutshell. She’s an educated, animal loving, music loving, ballet dancing, strawberry eating cook, gardener, mother, grandmother and wife, who enjoys travel, occasional gambling, and just so happens to be married to a sailor. Her story will forever be remembered through her antique charm bracelet, which will be passed down through our family generation after generation. However, the story is not completed yet. What new charms will be added next?
